On January 25th President Donald Trump signed an executive order to aggressively advance the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe immediately filed a challenge to the executive order in court.
The Women's March was an outpouring of hope for justice on every front. We must translate this call for action into action, create deep solidarity across racial, ethnic, economic, and class divisions. Standing with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and with other Native American communities is one of the front lines of actions.
My prayer for 2017 is a prayer for creation, justice, peace and community.
My creation prayer is that we will build deeper alliances with Mother Earth protecting her from marauding privateers who pillage and plunder in the pursuit of personal treasure and corporate profit, for the bounty of the earth is sufficient to meet every person’s basic needs, but not enough to satisfy one person’s rapacious greed.
My prayer is that bulldozers will be turned into pruning hooks, and concertina wire into plowshares, and the sacred sites of indigenous peoples will be violated no more.
My prayer is the we will covenant together to protect the flora and fauna of this good earth, and ensure the right of every child, woman and man to breath clean air and drink pure water, for water is life.
My prayer for creation is that future generations will inherit a planet that is verdant and vibrant and teaming with life.
My justice prayer is we will seek justice, love kindness and respect one another. The challenge before us now is to embrace diversity and live in harmony. We cannot change our past, but we need not allow racism, fear and violence to determine our future. Genocide is not the path to justice.
My prayer is that the United States will honor the 370 treaties that have been ratified with Native American nations and bring an end the long war that Euro-Americans have waged against indigenous peoples.
My prayer is that we as a nation will have the decency to return to their rightful owners Oak Flats, which is sacred land to the San Carlos Apache Tribe in Arizona, and the Sacred Black Hills to the Great Sioux Nation in the Dakotas, and other sacred sites of tribal peoples.
My prayer for justice echoes Mary’s Song in the Gospel of Luke, the proud will be scattered and the mighty put down from their thrones, the hungry filled with good things and the rich sent away empty.
My peace prayer is that we will re-dedicate ourselves to the practice of nonviolence. There is no easy road to that promised land where everyone can sit beneath their own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid. The day when nations shall study war no more is not close at hand. Therefore, let us hone our skills and renew our commitment to the way of nonviolence.
My prayer is that we will teach our children the skills they need to resolve conflict creatively with eye toward assuring mutual well-being and building mutual respect.
My peace prayer is that communities of faith will not shy away from the hard work of reparations, which requires the transfer of hard assets—land and money—to marginalized communities for without land reform and new economic practices, peace will remain the shadow of a wishful dream.
My community prayer is that we will value the commons and integrate economic production, social cooperation, personal responsibility and ethical norms into a single practice.
My prayer for the commons is that we will reclaim an ethic of reciprocity, use, and sustainability as the basis for personal morality and public policy.
My prayer is that we will not barter away the benefits of community for a bowl of pottage.
My prayer is that whenever and wherever possible people will seek out and seize opportunities to learn and share practical methods for building community, for the future requires people with a broad vision, not myopic grasping.
My community prayer is that you will share my prayer with your neighbors and friends, invite them to add to it and expand it and let me know so that I can continue to learn and to deepen my own spirituality.
