The need to stand in solidarity with the Stand Rock Sioux Tribe is most urgent. Winter has set in. The use of water canons and rubber bullets is widely reported on social media as it the increasing militarization of forces hired by the pipeline company.
It has been reported that the company is coming up against contract deadlines and therefore must either complete the pipeline soon or renegotiate contracts. If this is the case, I suspect that fines for violating the law will be much less costly to the company than new contract negotiations. The president-elect is reportedly invested in the pipeline, so we cannot expect any help from the next administration.
Friends in Brookings, South Dakota, sent me the following information. Buy tee shirts, sign petitions, withdraw funds, write letters. Do what you can in the solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
BEWARE: Do not trust the "facts" or "reporting" regarding DAPL and the water protectors presented on these online sites: Standing Rock Fact Checker, which is known to be a pro-DAPL propaganda site, and the Say Anything Blog, which is notoriously imbalanced in its coverage.
In the words of the Lakota elders, pray with and for the water, in your own way, right where you are.
Go to Standing Rock. Note: There has been a large influx of white allies to the spirit camps. Here are five things every non-native person should consider before going. In addition, native leaders ask white allies to remember: (1) no drugs or alcohol, (2) remain peaceful and in prayer all the time (act like you're in a sacred place), (3) come to work and not to hang out or sight-see, (4) realize you and your donations are welcome but you won't be greeted like a savior, (5) unless you're invited to perform music, don't, and (6) find the elders and get acquainted--they are the pillars of the community.
U.S. MILITARY VETERANS: You're being called to assemble as a peaceful, unarmed militia at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation on Dec. 4-7 to defend the water protectors from assault and intimidation at the hands of the militarized police force and DAPL security. Follow #VeteranStandingRock on Twitter.
Buy a T-shirt to raise awareness and donate to the fund. Note: Many T-shirts are being sold out there, many by exploitive profiteers. By purchasing this one, endorsed by the Sacred Stone Camp, you'll know where your money is going.
